Whenever you can get a gun for less money than a night of beers and Triple Dippers at Chili’s, you might question what you’re getting. The Taurus GX2 is one of the newest additions to the company’s portfolio of guns that shoot way better than the price tag suggests.
I won’t tell you that the design is perfect, and I won’t tell you this gun is the best striker-fired 9mm on the market. But I will tell you that this gun will outperform or run with any other gun within $100 of it. There are now a lot of great gun options on the market, but most of them are out of reach for a lower income consumer. The Taurus GX2 allows someone to get a reliable, versatile gun at a price point that almost anyone can squeeze out. There’s also a good argument for someone that gets a quality $250 gun and buys a case of 9mm to become proficient with that gun versus buying a $550 carry gun with no range time.
Carrying & Shooting the Taurus GX2
Taurus learned a lot of lessons from releasing their G3 line. They figured out where the demand volume is for features like an optics cut, size and thumb safeties. With the GX2 they focused on building one main variant that would satisfy the market, and they can build efficiently in volume, lowering the price. I’m personally not a fan of the thumb safety, but I just carry mine with the safety off so it carries and draws like a Walther PDP. It’s also cut for Glock-style sights, so you have a lot of options for great sights; I like the R3D sights from XS Sights.
With a street price well below $250, the GX2 can be used for a lot of different applications. Someone I respect a lot in the industry described it to me perfectly. He says this gun is perfect to keep inside a holster in your glovebox, and you can grab it for a quick errand when your primary carry gun is at the bottom of your gym bag. It’s also the perfect gun you keep in your truck and hand to one of your buddies that just landed at the airport and only had a carry-on.
Whether this is your everyday carry gun or a gun that lives in your glovebox, the Taurus GX2 will serve you well.
Cost: MSRP is currently $332. But you can find it for $250.
Pros: This is one of the best values in defensive handguns on the market.
Cons: There is no optics cut option for this gun, and all of them come with a manual thumb safety.
