There are scores of great backpacks out there from the likes of Kiafaru, Eberlestock and others, but one simple do-all backpack I’ve really enjoyed over the last several years is KUIU’s Divide 1500.
It’s got enough pockets to keep my important stuff compartmentalized so it can be memorized and accessed easily, but not so many that my shit gets lost in a labyrinth of layered nylon. And the pockets fully zip open so I can actually see what’s in there without fishing around, elbow-deep, like a boy on a booger.
Although it’s small by most pure-hunting-pack standards, thanks to its blood-proof expanding middle section, reinforced straps and legit waist belt (and perhaps some Boy Scout rope and a few bungee cords) it carries well over its size. I’m not suggesting this 1500 daypack is meant for packing out full animals, because it’s not. But it is this expanding “divide” that separates it from dozens of otherwise similar-sized packs. Elastic pockets on both sides hold water bottles, or, thanks to the adjustable straps above them, tall items like a tripod or sleeping pad. Of course it’s got a water bladder pocket against the back wall that I generally dedicate for my laptop.
I find myself choosing it for most of my travels because it doesn’t draw attention at airports, especially in KUIU’s tan “Ash” color. Made of tougher-than-hell 330 Cordura, it’s light and thin enough to stuff in my gun or bow case in circumstances when I must consolidate bags, and if I really wish to go light I can remove the waist belt. KUIU makes the Divide in several sizes, both slightly smaller and slightly larger than the 1500, but this one is about perfect for me.

Pros: Perfect size for carry-on bag and daypack for hunting/fishing; expands to carry much more than its size would suggest; simple, large pockets that won’t hide your stuff from you
Cons: Perhaps a little overpriced for what it is
