an old decaying sign warns of a firing range

Sunday Q&A — September 27, 2026

Questions by not-so-anonymous Instagram users. Answers by Jason Vincent.

Our Instagram Sunday Q&A is a weekly—or semiweekly depending on JV’s mood that day—chance for you to interact with our team directly. Ask whatever you like; insult us if you please; just don’t go crying about it when JV puts you in your place.

For those of you who are not completely inept, your answers will be swift and educational, leading you to knowledge akin to that of the ancient philosophers who helped drive our species from the Stone Age to modernity. That last part may not be true, but we sure as hell will give you our opinion and help you with whatever problems need solving.

We decided to post these Q&As here so those who had something better to do than look at Instagram on a Sunday afternoon or are dedicated to their craft and actually work Monday morning, can revel in the glory and enjoy some much-needed humor, quality product recommendations, and possible links to Schoby’s OnlyFans page.

*If you are assigned laps, these are not optional—all laps are mandatory and need to be filmed and sent to the Field Ethos Instagram account upon completion. Lap distance is arbitrary; only you know the full weight of your stupidity. Go the distance that feels right.

Sunday Q&A

Q: I’ve been off social for many months. I came back today for an Omega Guy update.

A: He’ll be here when he’s done with his chores.

Q: Thoughts on the whole shooting a moose with .22 ARC thing?

A: Pretty gay.

Q: Walther PPK in .380 or .32 ACP?

A: 32 ACP with a silencer.

Q: Any experience with Danner boots?

A: Yep. We were issued the USA-made Acadias and Danner snake boots. Both were and are great. The USA-made Danner boots are very high quality.

Q: Does .308 (16-inch barrel) have enough ass for elk or nilgai?

A: It’s adequate. A good ceiling would be 350 yards. Use a Barnes Bullets TSX. There are far better cartridges for both animals.

Q: Any experience with the 7mm-300 Norma Improved?

A: Absolutely not.

Q: What is a good Rolex to start with?

A: Submariner. Call Gunderson’s Jewelers.

Rolex Sea Dweller

Q: Price/details on the Seiko drop.

A: No.

Q: Any more details on the possible Seiko collab?

A: No. It’s coming.

Q: Seiko update?

A: Fuckin’ chill. Two laps.

Q: When will Joe Biden lower our diesel prices?

A: Fuel prices have gotten way out of hand.

Q: Any advice on how to grow an IG/social media account? Do you like paid ads?

A: Try posting photos of your feet every day for a month and see what happens.

Q: Can we get another FE 1911?

A: Working on something really special with Colt.

Q: Zambia apparel soooooon?

A: Sometime in October.

Q:  Truck/ranch-style bolt rifle in 5.56 and/or .223 for coyotes. What’s your rec?

A: Q Mini Fix.

Q: Nephew shot a buck with a 6.5 Creedmoor today. One drop of blood. Stereotypes exist …

A: Sounds like a bad shot.

Q: Best rangefinding binos?

A: We avoid using “the best” to describe things. The new Leupold BX-6HDs are top tier. They’re a little on the heavy side but they’ll be more durable than the Euro options.

Q: What group of people (besides Roof Koreans) would you want to fight a local insurgency with?

A: Gypsies.

Q: Best 9.3×62 round for wood bison? Lapua Naturalis? Definitely not any Hornady.

A: Federal 9.3×62 with the 286-grain Swift A-Frame.

Q: Can we pre-order the upcoming Gin shirts?

A: No.

Q: When’s the next restock of the Ranger boots?

A: They’re on the way.

Q: Would I get any funny looks wearing Rhodie brushstroke on a hunt in Africa?

A: Nope. Especially in Zimbabwe. They love Rhodesian camo there, especially in the capital. Just kidding. You’ll be arrested. It’s a fine in South Africa though.

Q: No Q, just came to say that the Sweet T is the best blade profile I’ve ever owned. Killed it!

A: Terry Houin did a good job on the design of this one. He drew it on plexiglass and then dremeled a blank that he sent to Winkler Knifes like a lil’ Navy SEAL arts & crafts project.

Q: Thoughts on Proof rifles for hunting?

A: Zero experiences with Proof Research rifles, but their barrels are solid.

Q: Mossberg 500 for a do-it-all first shotgun or go all tactical with the 590A1?

A: Mossberg 590A1 is a must own.

Q: Chassis recommendations for a Ruger American Gen 2 Predator?

A: First you ask your fiancé for permission to buy an Omega watch. Now you’re customizing a Ruger American? I thought we had you headed in the right direction. Fuck it—58 laps.

Q: Least favorite group of people?

A: Rich white women.

Q: How’s the Rossi collab coming along?

A: The FE x Rossi Single Wide has dropped.

Q: Henry FE CRUSR, when walking in the woods, sling or no sling?

A: Sling.

Q: Recommendations for rain gear for hunting.

A: Kuiu.

Q: Walnut or maple for M70 Super Grade?

A: Walnut.

Q: What’s the status of Russell Moccasin?

A: Way overpriced.

Q: Thoughts on getting a Glock 19 Gen 6?

A: Very solid weapon.

Q: How do we feel about the Ruger MK IV?

A: Get the Volquartsen. It’ll be your favorite handgun at the range.

Q: Thank you for posting the limited edition M70 .375 H&H–got it. Can you recommend scope setup for do-it-all gun in Africa.

Q: Lots of people over the last week send DMs saying they picked up the new Winchester Model 70 Super Grade Cape Buffalo edition based on our recommendation. Chambered in .375 H&H, it’s probably the best value we’ve seen in safari rifles in a long time. At $2,400, it’s a no brainer. An EOTech Vudu 1-10x in Talley detachable rings is the move. You can go from using the iron sights for close work to making a 400-yard hit on a kudu in under 10 seconds.

Q: 6.5 Creedmoor too small for elk?

A: Why the fuck does everyone keep asking about non-magnums for elk? Yes, 6.5 Creedmoor and .308 will kill an elk. Hell, they can kill an elephant in the hands of a skilled shooter. But a heavier, expanding bullet at magnum velocities offers more versatility. They open up distance options, penetrate better and are more forgiving when you hit dense bone. Stop being pussies and eat the recoil. Throw on a Rugged Alaskan Ti silencer and the recoil won’t be there anyway.

Two very experienced shooters and writers have been showing big-game kills with .22 Creedmoor. @thetylerfreel and @papwinkle. They are not wrong. A well-placed shot with this cartridge is very lethal and in the hands of Western hunters with their experience level and coolness under pressure, it’s a solid option. For those of you with less experience, use more horsepower, and a heavier bullet like a Barnes Bullets TSX. Do not take this as a substitute for practice. Shoot from prone and off sticks at ranges from 100 to 500 yards regularly. Your prey seserves it.

Q: For a first rifle, which would you choose: Lupo, Waypoint 2020, X-Bolt 2, M70 (300 WM)?

A: Getting a .300 Win Mag as your first hunting rifle is fine, but it’s not the best if you haven’t built fundamentals with something more shootable on the range for a beginner. Get some reps in with a .223, .22 Creed or 6.5 Creed and get proficient with them before stepping straight into a .300 Win Mag. My 12-year-old was making long-range kils with my heavy and silenced .300 WM Gunwerks at 10 years old, but he started with a. .22 LR at 4 and shot tons of short-action cartridges before this. When I’m teaching a new shooter, I never start with a magnum. When you’re ready, get the Springfield or Browning and you will not be let down.

Q: Someone stole my Vellies out of my car. Can you do a re-run?

A: Sounds like you may be a meth manufacturer. Who lives in a place where people steal footwear? Sounds like you need to sort some things out before you replace our boots.

Q: Anyone in the group ever shot a wolverine?

A: Tim Sundles from Buffalo Bore once shot a charging wolverine with a .500 Linebaugh.

Q: Favorite cocktail/beer while out in the field.

A: Local lagers in a 3rd world country.

Q: Waterfowl shotgun recommendation?

A: Huge fans of the Browning A5s.

Q: Will there be a restock on the elephant skin field journal soon?

A: I instructed the squad to restock this just last week.

Q: Springfield Echelon Comp opinion?

A: The Springfield Echelon pistols are great. We’ve shot them a lot, including trying to break one of the prototypes. We couldn’t. They’re very relaiable.

Q: Wanna buy my first AR, thinking of going Daniel Defense. Any advice?

A: Get a Bravo Company. It’s a premium/professional-grade rifle.

Q: Got last week’s laps in. Why “never Kimber?”

A: Firsthand experience: mostly garbage/unreliable products backed by garbage customer service. I have used a few great Kimber flukes, but it’s a roll of the dice.

Q: Any recommendations for a new wallet? Old one is ready to retire.

A: We have a badass brown elephant with red leather interior that will be in stock before Christmas.

Q: You ever use Buffalo Bore?

A: Yes. A lot. Great ammo company run by a badass American.

Q: Favorite series of Land Cruiser?

A: Series 70.

Q: Is a 6mm ARC good for elk and black bear?

A: The ARCs just need to go away.

Q: Any thoughts/hands-on time with the Leupold LC yet?

A: We have not received any Leupold LCOs for testing.
