The Beermosa cocktail

Summertime Sipper – The Beermosa

By Connor Lewis

I won’t knock you if you bring a bottle of Prosecco and a jug of orange juice into the boat – I’ll certainly imbibe with you. But these days, my preference is far and away the wonderful elixir that is the Beermosa. Cheap beer with a splash of orange juice. It doesn’t sound like much, but when it’s early in the morning at a boat launch or you are groggily pulling on waders, it’s a great reminder that getting up early is worth it after all.

Depending on your taste you have a few options to choose from in your beer and orange juice combinations. I find that extremely light lagers with less of a “white bread floating in club soda” taste and more of a “classic lager” taste tend to fare better. So cheap beer works, just not the cheapest beer.

The Beermosa

My personal belief is that a Beermosa should be made with one of the following three beers:

  1. Founders Solid Gold Lager
  2. Busch Light
  3. Coors Banquet

*Honorable mention goes to Blue Moon.

Beer selection is mainly semantics as Beermosas are a cocktail you drink in volume. No one sips Beermosa like it’s Pappy and contemplates the tasting notes. You slug ‘em back while throwing totes in boats and in between bad casts at the start of the day. You can probably get away with a wide variety of beers that tickle your fancy, but these are my tried and true champions of liquid breakfasts.

Go cheap on the beer, not on the orange juice. You really don’t need much so don’t skimp out. Go to the grocery store and get something claiming it’s freshly squeezed. You should be adding 2 ounces or less to the beer anyways if you want to do it right. No pulp is my call but hey, it’s America, do what you want.

    The Cocktail:

Grab an ice cold beer, crack it open.

    Take a sip.

Pour 2 ounces of OJ or less in the can (you are drinking beer from cans aren’t you?) and pour a bit around the rim as well.

    Chug it.

Repeat steps 1-3 when you catch a fish, when you lose a fish, or if you catch no fish.

These consumption recommendations are formulated to ensure pleasure throughout the day. If this isn’t your brand of breakfast cocktail then you might want to look toward an Irish coffee either hot or iced. But that introduction will have to be another time.
