INEOS Just Called Out the EU’s Tariff Stupidity

By Matthew Scott

We live in a world drowning in corporate PR bullshit. When things go wrong, companies typically bury us in a blizzard of carefully crafted statements designed to offend absolutely nobody and clarify absolutely nothing. Most brands have lost their guts, their spine, and their voice. INEOS Automotive isn’t one of those brands—and their CEO Lynn Calder just proved it.

The British company behind the Grenadier SUV and Quartermaster pickup—tough, purpose-built, no-frills 4x4s—has battled an uphill fight from the start. Founded by billionaire Sir Jim Ratcliffe, an accomplished explorer and dedicated 4×4 enthusiast, INEOS Automotive began when Ratcliffe saw Land Rover abandoning the Defender’s utilitarian legacy in favor of a machine built to transport suburbanites to yoga classes. Rather than complain, Ratcliffe decided to fill the gap himself, building rugged, real-world trucks for people who actually need them.

Of course, building something honest and utilitarian in today’s climate isn’t easy. First, INEOS had to navigate endless environmental red tape and regulatory hurdles just to get their trucks into production. Now, European politicians have thrown another wrench into the works.

Here’s the backstory: For decades, the European Union has levied a hefty 10% tariff on American-made vehicles entering Europe. Meanwhile, the U.S. charged European automakers just 2.5%. You don’t need a degree in economics to spot the glaring imbalance here. Europe’s cozy arrangement favored their own manufacturers at the expense of American businesses, and for years, no one bothered to correct it—until Donald Trump entered the scene.

From the outset, President Trump made his intentions clear: level the playing field, or America would hit back harder. He demanded fairness, reciprocity, and basic common sense. EU leaders had every opportunity to negotiate fairly, correct the imbalance, or at least attempt some form of genuine diplomacy. Instead, they sat idle, assuming Trump wouldn’t follow through. They gambled—and lost.

When Trump finally acted and announced a 25% tariff on imported vehicles effective April 3rd, EU politicians reacted as if blindsided. They cried foul, pointed fingers across the Atlantic, and feigned surprise. But INEOS Automotive isn’t playing that game. They immediately called out the EU politicians’ incompetence and negligence:

“We are outraged that the tariff situation with the US has been neglected by the EU,” the company stated bluntly.

INEOS went even further, accurately pinpointing the EU’s deliberate inaction:

“President Trump has been very clear on his intention to implement tariffs on the auto industry. He has been asking for fairness and reciprocity and yet European leaders have not come to the table to negotiate a better solution.”

INEOS Automotive CEO Lynn Calder

That kind of straight talk from a corporate press release is incredibly rare, and it speaks volumes about the company’s leadership. CEO Lynn Calder isn’t mincing words—she’s standing up for the brand, her employees, and customers on both sides of the Atlantic. Calder is exactly the kind of no-nonsense, decisive leader we need more of: someone willing to speak plain truth to politicians who refuse to listen.

“This is what happens when politicians sit on their hands,” Calder added. “As a growing EU-based automobile brand, we are vulnerable to tariffs, and we need our politicians to support our business, our jobs, and our economies.”

But support is exactly what European leaders failed to deliver. The Grenadier isn’t some luxury mall-crawler with massaging seats and a heated steering wheel. It’s built for real off-road adventure, rugged trails, and genuine work. It’s precisely the vehicle enthusiasts have demanded for decades. And now, thanks to EU politicians’ negligence, INEOS faces hurdles in its biggest market—the United States.

“The US government has also been clear about the consequences of non-engagement,” INEOS noted. “This should be a surprise to no-one in the EU, and it could and should have been averted.”

The EU could’ve easily prevented this fiasco. Instead, they chose political complacency over common sense. And now, companies like INEOS Automotive—who create jobs, build products people genuinely need, and deliver economic growth—are getting screwed by politicians who gamble with their economies and lose.

Since America is already INEOS’ largest market, here’s an idea: Maybe it’s time we welcome them here with open arms—and fewer regulatory hoops. Plenty of states would happily embrace INEOS’s manufacturing jobs, honest leadership, and common-sense approach to building trucks. Let the EU politicians sit in Brussels, wondering why their businesses are packing up and leaving.

We should applaud INEOS Automotive’s bold honesty and Lynn Calder’s gutsy leadership. She didn’t duck responsibility or hide behind corporate double-speak. Instead, Calder put blame exactly where it belongs—squarely on the shoulders of European politicians who gambled with their own economy and lost. We need more companies—and more CEOs—like INEOS and Calder.
